Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipprediabetes is the state in your body where your blood glucose levels start becoming higher than normal but not yet high enough to be considered full-blown diabetes when you eat sugar it is absorbed into your bloodstream your pancreas then secretes insulin which moves the sugar into your cells to be used for energy when you have pre-diabetes your cells become resistant to insulin and the sugar cannot get into the cells and it builds up in the blood one hard thing about pre-diabetes is that it typically has no symptoms risks for pre-diabetes are many but the common ones are being overweight having obstructive sleep apnea smoking eating a diet high in processed foods and sugars and having had gestational diabetes having pre-diabetes also commonly goes along with high blood pressure and high cholesterol the way to diagnose pre-diabetes is checking a hemoglobin a1c level the best things you can do to improve or prevent pre-diabetes is to eat healthy foods be active watch your weight stop smoking and ask your doctor about certain medications used to improve insulin sensitivity [Music]
