Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[Music] the gallbladder is a small organ next to your liver that stores bile when you eat particularly fatty foods the gallbladder squeezes the bile into the intestines to help digest the food sometimes gallstones can form due to an imbalance of cholesterol and bile salts in fact about 20 percent of people get gallstones but luckily only 20 percent of those people will ever have symptoms common symptoms are nausea vomiting and pain in the right upper abdomen after eating these symptoms occur because a stone can block the duct where bile leaves the gallbladder anybody can get gallstones but you may be at a higher risk if you are a woman over age 40 overweight or of native american or mexican descent if you are having symptoms from gallstones the most common test to check is an ultrasound there are no effective medications to dissolve or remove gallstones if you have gallstones but do not have symptoms no treatment is needed however most people who get symptoms do have their gallbladder removed this is done with laparoscopic surgery with several small incisions and a camera and most people go home the same day
