Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[Music] the holidays are here and for almost everyone our celebrations and traditions include good food the foods that we enjoy bring us closer to our family and friends as well as to our cultures and ancestors but no one wants a holiday visit by the Dark Angel of food poisoning these four tips can make sure that your holiday eating is as helpful as possible first clean germs that cause foodborne illnesses can survive in many places in your kitchen wash your hands well before preparing food and use hot soapy water to clean utensils cutting boards and countertops second separate use separate cutting boards and platters for raw meat poultry and seafood and clean them well after use until cooked keep raw meats and eggs separate from other foods in the refrigerator and keep in mind that that cookie dough may be tasty but it contains raw eggs until the cookies are baked third cook meats to the correct temperature using a cooking thermometer is a great way to make sure that meats are cooked well enough to kill the germs that can make you sick without turning that roast into leather as a rule of thumb the goal is an internal temperature of 145 degrees for whole cuts of meat and fish and 165 degrees for ground meats and poultry finally just chill refrigerate perishable foods below 40 degrees within two hours from all of us at Alaska public media here's to a happy and healthy 2019
